Getting Involved with Citizen Science in NL
2025-06-10 · Nature NL Team
Citizen science is at the heart of what we do at Nature NL. By involving everyday people in scientific research, we’re able to gather data on a scale that would be impossible with professional researchers alone.
BioBlitz Events
Our annual BioBlitz events bring together nature lovers of all experience levels. Armed with field guides, cameras, and curiosity, participants survey a defined area over a set period to document as many species as possible.
Monitoring Programs
We run several ongoing monitoring programs:
- Waterbird Monitoring — Tracking populations of loons, grebes, and other waterbirds on lakes and wetlands across the province.
- Insect Monitoring — Documenting butterfly, moth, and pollinator populations to understand changes in insect biodiversity.
- Sightings Database — Report any wildlife sighting through our platform to contribute to our growing dataset.
Why It Matters
The data collected through these programs informs conservation policy, helps track environmental changes, and builds a deeper understanding of Newfoundland and Labrador’s natural heritage. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to spend time outdoors and learn new skills.
